The Fellows Scholarship awards $50,000, $25,000 and $10,000 scholarships to extraordinary young people, 18 and under, who have completed a significant piece of work. Application categories are Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Literature, Music, Philosophy and Outside the Box.
The class of 2023 Fellows included many who developed research related to making an impact on the environment and bettering peoples’ lives. These projects are highlighted below.
Ved Ganesh received a $25,000 scholarship for creating a structure design to mitigate coastal erosion. His project investigated the cost-effectiveness of conventional and experimental coastal defenses in order to develop a set of overarching guidelines for the targeted innovation of future coastal defenses. The project’s most significant contribution is the formulation of guidelines that can predict a defense’s effectiveness – a roadmap for the coastal defenses of the future.

Neel Redkar received a $25,000 scholarship for creating an inexpensive, efficient framework for carbon capture (storage/conversion of CO2 emissions), which would decrease energy costs and provide usable hydrocarbon fuel for revenue. The oxygen produced as part of this system could be returned as a net surplus to our atmosphere or repurposed industrially. Possibilities include revolutions in artificial photosynthesis, water treatment, and energy efficient desalination/electrolysis.

Anna Du received a $10,000 scholarship for research on how early informational molecules that make up the basic blueprint of life, such as RNA and DNA, were created. This research could potentially lead to a drug discovery and delivery method that would work for everyone all around the world, without fear of potential issues such as allergies or other forms of bio incompatibility, allowing for more people to get access to lifesaving technology.

Suraj Reddy received a $10,000 scholarship for developing a system that could result in safer buildings in earthquake-prone regions at a reasonable cost. Not only will this technology safeguard buildings during extreme events, but it will also increase the overall resilience and durability of structures, improving their longevity and reducing maintenance costs. This project offers the potential to save lives, preserve valuable infrastructure, and offer newfound peace of mind to those residing in areas prone to earthquakes.
