Keynote Presentations
Opening Keynote Address: Uniting Game Theory, Math Stars, and Actors To Build Thoughtfulness in the AI Age
Picture a "math person", a "humanities person", a "drama person", and a "philosophy/ethics person". Are they very different people? We now can build people with all at once.
The speaker will describe his innovation: a mutually-beneficial cooperation between high schoolers who are kind and mathematically clever, and professional actors, teaming up to simultaneously teach creative problem solving to others (CNN: https://www.cnn.com/world/professor-po-shen-loh-actors-classrooms-spc). It also creates a pathway for math stars to build communication skills that enhance their impact.
Po-Shen Loh: Carnegie Mellon math professor Po-Shen Loh is a social entrepreneur and inventor. He was the national coach of the USA International Mathematical Olympiad team for a decade, which ranked #1 four times. He is an IMO silver medalist, and received the USA Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. His public lectures reach tens of thousands of people in 100+ cities annually. He featured in or co-created videos totaling over 24 million YouTube views.
Closing Keynote Address: From Bacteria to Brilliance: The Oddball Origins of Human Intelligence
Minds are stranger than they seem. This talk will recount the epic, billion-year journey of intelligence, revealing the six evolutionary breakthroughs that laid the foundation for modern thought, and showing how some unexpected skills (movement, senses, emotion, and imagination!) helped make us who we are. By the end, you’ll see how understanding this story can help you think more powerfully today.
Brandon Hendrickson: Brandon’s the founder of Science is WEIRD, a sprawling online science course that helps clever kids fall in love with all the levels of the world. He has a master’s in educational leadership and a couple of bachelor’s degrees, and lives in Minnesota with his wife and three kids. He’s helping shape a new approach to education at his Substack, The Lost Tools of Learning (losttools.substack.com), and is writing a book on a new approach to homeschooling.

Why don’t penguins freeze?
It’s cold in Antarctica! Where Emperor Penguins live, temperatures barely reach 20ºF in the summer. Winds regularly scream past 100 mph. Almost nothing survives there… but penguins thrive. How do they do it?
In this hyper-interactive live lesson, Brandon will guide you through the ultimate cold-weather mystery. Bring your craziest ideas as together we dive into thermodynamics, biomechanics, and evolutionary anatomy to discover the scientific marvels that lets these birds flourish in nature’s harshest conditions.

No origami experience is necessary!
Ben Parker: For nearly twenty years I have focused on origami as my primary vocation for its artistic and mathematical enrichment. My research has led to the opening of a multitude of opportunities that I have been slowly exploring. I have developed my own methodology for geometric origami design, published books and academic articles on origami mathematics, and exhibited my work internationally.
Since origami education is at the heart of my practice, I lead workshops on origami techniques to audiences of all ages. I work in the CODES department at Wesleyan University running their makerspace, the IDEAS Lab.

Parenting a Gamer: Fostering Healthy Technology Relationships
Like it or not, we are raising kids in the digital age. Between technology in school and the appeal of gaming, kids are surrounded by screens. All of this leads caregivers to wonder: How much screen time is too much? Which games are beneficial, and which are potentially harmful? Is it true that gaming will lead to violent behavior? How can we raise kids to have a healthy relationship with gaming and their other responsibilities? In this session, we'll answer all those questions and more, including how to implement and enforce a healthy balance, and how to set your child up for success as they move toward adulthood. Led by a teacher who is also a parent and a gamer, you'll learn how to support your gamer as they grow, while still allowing them to be their gamer self.

In their free time, Ash loves to hike, bake, play video games, and spend time with their family.
Assessor's Creed: Meaningful Gaming in Education
We all have a game we love because we learned something, yet public perception is that games are the antithesis of education. The solution isn’t edutainment- it’s hiding in the entertainment games we love. What do we learn from video games and how do we integrate entertainment games into school without parental uproar or a loss in test scores? Attendees will leave with specific examples of games to integrate in the classroom and home environments as well as broad criteria for determining how and whether to incorporate games into a learning environment.

Making Mistakes is Okay
Do you have a perfectionist in your life? High expectations and optimal performance are not bad things of course, yet it can be hard to know how to help when making mistakes and imperfections become painful and dysregulating to our kids. Join this session to learn fresh ideas around how to think about and approach imperfections with your child, so that the idea of “good enough for now” can feel manageable to them when perfection is not possible or realistic.

“My Child Doesn’t Do Non-Preferred Tasks.”
Does anyone talk about your child this way, including maybe you? Although it can feel hard and frustrating when our kids won’t engage in what we hope they will, this statement is not helpful because it can imply there is a line in the sand that we must make them cross. Shifting the way we think about "non-preferred tasks", to instead explore what may be going on for the child in these moments, can better guide us what to do next. In this session, we'll discuss some of the ways we can meet our kids where they are, while thoughtfully guiding them towards learning opportunities that may not feel as familiar or comfortable to them.
